Bailleul Communal Cemetery, France

On 23rd February 1915, the 1st East Surrey battalion of 14 Brigade, 5th Division were relieved from the front line opposite Messines and moved back to Neuve Eglise, which, being close to the front line was subject to periods of German shelling. At noon on 27th February the enemy began to shell the village and before the battalion had time to leave their billets a shell had demolished a house occupied by some of C Company, killing seven men and wounding five more. William Willis died from wounds on 28th February and was buried a few miles back at Bailleul and may have been one of those wounded the day before.
